How to Choose an AI Image Model for Your Task

There is no useful model choice without a task. A text-to-image prompt starts with a written scene; image editing starts from a reference and requests a change. After choosing the workflow, compare the controls actually documented for that endpoint and judge outputs against a short, task-specific checklist.

Name the task before the model

Are you creating a new illustration, a product concept, a portrait, or changing a supplied photo? For a new scene, consider a text-to-image route. For a bounded correction, consider an edit route that accepts source images. Keep a copy of the input and define which details matter.

Compare route-specific capabilities

Wan 2.7 Pro and Qwen Image 3.0 Pro each document separate text-to-image and edit endpoints. Qwen’s edit route accepts 1–3 reference images and has its own prompt, negative-prompt and resolution controls. Seedream 5.0 Pro’s text-to-image route documents its own ratio, resolution and file-format settings. These distinctions are more useful than a blanket claim that one model is best.

Use a small evaluation brief

Choose three criteria before testing—for example, composition, material detail and readable negative space. Keep the prompt and destination constant, then compare results. For editing, add preservation checks such as face, crop, label or background. Record settings from each actual form.

Keep output limitations visible

A generated image may alter small details, text, geometry or lighting. Do not treat model selection as a guarantee of exact reproduction. If the image makes a factual product claim, compare it with a trusted source and correct or discard inaccurate details.

Choose a winner only for the use case

A model that fits an illustrative concept may not be suitable for a factual catalog image. Name the deliverable and the quality checks; state why a result was selected. Recheck available endpoint controls because options can change.

Prompt or planning example

Task: edit an authorized lamp photo to replace only the wall. Criteria: retain lamp silhouette, keep camera crop, make background lighting plausible. Compare an edit route using the same source and prompt; do not generalize from one run.

Adapt this starting point to the source image, destination and controls shown in the selected route. Keep the original where relevant, then compare the result against the specific details named in your brief. If a detail is factual, verify it from a trusted source before using the image.
