Text-to-Image vs. AI Image Editing: Pick the Right Start

Text-to-image and image editing solve different starting-point problems. Text-to-image begins with a written scene description. Image editing begins with a source image and asks for a change. Choose based on whether the original composition is flexible or carries details that matter.

Use text-to-image for a scene that can be invented

Describe subject, framing, setting, light and the most important details. The model creates the initial composition from the brief, so do not expect an exact existing product, person or layout unless the workflow supports a suitable reference.

Use an edit workflow when a source is central

If you need to change a background, remove a distraction or create a visual variation from an image, choose an edit endpoint that accepts references. Wan 2.7 Pro and Qwen Image 3.0 Pro document distinct T2I and edit endpoints. Qwen’s edit route supports 1–3 reference images and route-specific prompt, negative prompt and resolution controls.

State the boundary of the requested change

For an edit, name the change first and list what should remain: “Change only the wall color; preserve the lamp shape, crop and shadows.” Check these details after generation. A prompt expresses intent but does not guarantee exact preservation.

Compare by task, not by model name

Keep the same brief and evaluate whether the output meets the job: composition for a new concept; preserved geometry and clean edges for an edit; text and labels against a reference for factual images. Avoid declaring one route the overall winner.

Choose a different tool for exact pixel work

A generated edit may synthesize covered or altered areas. If exact logo, text or edge accuracy is required, use a pixel-level editor or insert verified source assets rather than treating generated reconstruction as exact.

Prompt or planning example

New concept: “A blue glass bottle on a pale stone plinth, side light, full object visible.” Edit: “Using this bottle photo, replace only the plain background with a pale stone studio; keep the bottle and label as photographed.”

Adapt this starting point to the source image, destination and controls shown in the selected route. Keep the original where relevant, then compare the result against the specific details named in your brief. If a detail is factual, verify it from a trusted source before using the image.
