AI Prompt Expansion: Refine a Brief Without Losing Intent

Prompt expansion means adding useful visual detail to a short request. It can also bury the main idea beneath style language. This guide focuses on a dependable practice whether refinement happens in your own words or through a control actually shown in a model form: preserve the task, add only details that serve it, then inspect the output.

Decide what the short brief is missing

Before adding adjectives, ask four questions: What is the subject? What should the viewer notice first? What is the setting and light? Which details must be present or absent? If those answers are already clear, more words may add noise rather than direction.

Expand by one meaningful category

Turn “a product photo” into a product, composition, environment and light description. Do not add multiple aesthetics that conflict, such as “minimal empty studio” and “busy editorial props.” For editing, say what changes and what remains. Wan 2.7 Pro and Qwen Image 3.0 Pro list separate generation and editing endpoints, so choose the route for the task before tuning wording.

Compare a short brief and a refined one

Keep the subject and settings fixed, then compare two versions: “A red bicycle by a brick wall” versus “A red commuter bicycle, full side view, against a simple brick wall, overcast daylight, clear space around the wheels.” Note which additional instructions visibly help and which are ignored. This is a small test, not proof of a general model rule.

Treat interface controls as endpoint-specific

Do not assume that every model has a prompt-expansion toggle, negative prompt, or optimization feature. For example, the Qwen Image 3.0 Pro edit documentation describes prompt and negative-prompt controls for that edit route; that does not establish identical controls on its text-to-image route or another provider. Use only controls exposed by the selected live form.

A compact revision loop

1) Save the original prompt. 2) Identify one unclear visual choice. 3) Add a concrete phrase for that choice. 4) Regenerate under otherwise comparable conditions. 5) inspect against the same checklist. Keep the shorter version if added wording does not create a useful difference.

Prompt or planning example

Short: “A bicycle in a city.” Refined: “A red commuter bicycle in a quiet side street, full frame visible, wet pavement after rain, soft overcast light, no people or signage.” The refinement clarifies composition and atmosphere; it does not guarantee a particular result.

Adapt this starting point to the source image, destination and controls shown in the selected route. Keep the original where relevant, then compare the result against the specific details named in your brief. If a detail is factual, verify it from a trusted source before using the image.
