How to Write Better AI Image Prompts: A Practical Brief
A useful AI image prompt reads like a compact visual brief. Put the subject first, specify composition and setting, then add lighting and material details that serve the image. For editing, describe the requested change and the details to preserve. Clear wording improves the brief’s testability; it does not guarantee a particular output.
Build a five-part visual brief
Name the subject, its placement and crop, the setting, the light, and the most important material or style. Choose concrete visual language: “soft window light from the left” is easier to evaluate than “beautiful lighting.” Keep secondary details only if they affect the result.
Use a different prompt shape for editing
Text-to-image describes the whole scene to create. An edit prompt describes what changes in a supplied image and what should remain. Example: “Replace only the plain wall with a warm plaster background; keep the lamp, crop, shadow and camera angle.” Check each preserved detail afterward.
Match the route to the task
Wan 2.7 Pro and Qwen Image 3.0 Pro document separate text-to-image and image-edit routes. Qwen’s edit endpoint has its own reference and prompt controls. Select the right route first; do not assume the same fields exist on every endpoint.
Revise one instruction at a time
Save a baseline. If the subject is correct but framing is wrong, revise framing only. If a background change is too broad, narrow the edit scope. Keep model and other settings stable during comparison and record what changed.
Inspect with the intended use in mind
Check composition, edges, small text, shadows, material and any factual product details. A larger resolution cannot rescue a contradictory prompt or guarantee correct lettering. If exact text or geometry is essential, compare with the source and use verified assets.
Prompt or planning example
Text-to-image: “A matte cobalt glass carafe, full silhouette centered, on pale oak, soft morning light from left, realistic but restrained reflections, quiet neutral setting, no lettering.” Edit: ask for one change and list what stays.
Adapt this starting point to the source image, destination and controls shown in the selected route. Keep the original where relevant, then compare the result against the specific details named in your brief. If a detail is factual, verify it from a trusted source before using the image.
