How to Choose an Aspect Ratio for an AI Image

Aspect ratio describes an image’s width in relation to its height. It helps you choose a frame for a portrait, banner, square tile or landscape scene. The right choice depends on where the image will appear and what must remain visible after placement—not on an assumption that every image generator offers the same preset ratios.

Work backward from the destination

Check the aspect ratio of the slot where the image will be used. If the destination crops automatically, identify the safe area for faces, product labels and text. Leave extra space around important content when the final crop is not fully under your control.

Choose composition and ratio together

A wide scene can hold a horizon or several objects; a tall frame can give a person room from head to toe; a square can make a compact tile. These are composition prompts, not universal rules. State subject placement and available negative space so the framing supports the actual use.

Confirm endpoint-specific options

Seedream 5.0 Pro’s text-to-image endpoint documents its own supported aspect ratio, resolution and file-format settings. Other routes can differ. Check the currently selected ImageGen Studio form, then note the model and ratio alongside the output.

Do not mistake ratio for resolution

Ratio determines shape; resolution determines pixel dimensions. Selecting a wide frame does not by itself provide enough pixels for a large banner. Check both the destination’s crop and the output size.

Review likely crops before exporting

Preview the image in the final slot. Check that the subject, product edge, hands and any required negative space remain. If an important detail is cut off, adjust composition or regenerate in a more suitable frame rather than stretching the image.

Prompt or planning example

For a landscape hero with a subject at left and copy at right, ask for a wide composition with clear negative space on the right. Then verify the endpoint offers the required shape and preview the actual page crop.

Adapt this starting point to the source image, destination and controls shown in the selected route. Keep the original where relevant, then compare the result against the specific details named in your brief. If a detail is factual, verify it from a trusted source before using the image.
